Java apple is not actually an apple. It is a tropical fruit that grows in south-east Asia, including southern India, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Thailand’s variety of wax apples are big sizes and very sweet and delicious, while some varieties can be relatively round, others are somewhat pear-shaped, wide at the bottom, and very narrow at the top.
Water apple often grows quickly and bears fruit early. Therefore, these plants need fertilizer to be fairly frequently and on a regular basis. Fertilize according to vegetative growth and after the fruit is picked. Fertilizer during flowering and fruit set should be avoided. In addition to chemical fertilizers, organic fertilizer – poultry manure, rabbit droppings or cow dung can be used. Organic fertilizers not only provide nutrients to plants gradually, but they also improve soil conditions.
When the colour of the fruit changes from green to light green or red (in the case of the red variety), it is an indication that the fruit is ready to be picked. The fruit is also quite edible at this stage. The fruit is handpicked. Pick at the mature stage. Always handle the fruit carefully as the skin is susceptible to mechanical damage during handling.
