Description

LECA Clay Balls

Leca stands for Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate. Manufacturers produce Leca balls by heating clay in a rotary kiln at high temperatures, causing the clay to expand and form round pellets. These small, lightweight, and porous clay pellets find common use in gardening and hydroponic systems.

Their porous structure facilitates excellent aeration and water retention in soil or hydroponic setups, fostering healthy root growth. People often favor them for terrariums and as a medium for orchids or other plants that need ample aeration around their roots.”

How to use Leca Balls in gardening

  1. Prepare the Pot or Container: Fill the bottom of your pot or container with a layer of Leca balls. Ensure it covers at least 1-2 inches of the base.
  2. Place a Barrier: If you’re using Leca in a pot with soil, place a permeable barrier like a landscape fabric or a fine mesh over the Leca layer to prevent the soil from sinking into the balls.
  3. Add Soil or Growing Medium: Above the barrier, add your preferred soil or growing medium. This setup provides a well-draining base while allowing proper aeration and moisture control for the roots.
  4. Planting: Plant your seeds, seedlings, or plants in the soil or medium above the Leca layer. Ensure they’re planted at the appropriate depth and water them accordingly.
  5. Watering: When watering, pour water directly onto the soil. The Leca layer underneath will help with drainage, preventing waterlogging and ensuring adequate aeration for the roots.
  6. Monitor and Maintain: Regularly check the moisture levels in the soil and adjust your watering accordingly. The Leca balls will assist in maintaining optimal moisture levels by allowing excess water to drain away.

Things that keep in mind before using Hydroton Balls

  1. Ensure healthy roots: Confirm strong root growth before transitioning to Leca.
  2. Supplement nutrients: Use fertilizers or hydroponic solutions as Leca doesn’t provide nutrients.
  3. Ensure adequate aeration: Avoid compacting Leca to allow roots to breathe.
  4. Research plant compatibility: Not all plants thrive in Leca; select ones preferring good drainage.
  5. Rinse before use: Thoroughly clean Leca balls to remove dust or debris.
  6. Choose appropriate pots: Opt for pots with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.
  7. Regular monitoring: Watch moisture levels and plant condition; adjust care as needed.
  8. Consider reusability: Clean and sterilize Leca for potential reuse, ensuring no contamination.
