Conocarpus Erectus (Buttonwood)
Conocarpus erectus, also known as buttonwood or button mangrove, is a mangrove shrub in the Combretaceae family. It species can be found on the coastlines of tropical and subtropical regions all over the world.
Conocarpus erectus, the bark is thick and contains broad plates of thin grey to brown scales. Brittle twigs with angled or narrowly winged cross-sections. The leaves are simple and rectangular, with a tapering tip and an entire border. They contain two salt glands at the base of each leaf and are dark green and lustrous on top and lighter with thin silky hairs underneath.
The fruits are button-like, 5.8 mm in diameter, and lack petals; they are produced in stalked panicles with 35-56 flowed flowers. The fruit is a cluster of 5,15 mm long red to brown scaly, two-winged cone-like seeds. When the seed heads are ready, they burst and the seeds are distributed by water.
