Grapefruit plants need full sunshine, but that doesn’t mean you have to live in a sunny state to grow them. They are really easy to grow inside. Just keep the tree outside until the temperature drops below 50, and then place it near a sunny window indoors. As a bonus, you’ll get to enjoy the fresh, summery fragrance of the winter harvest in your home. On average, fruit-bearing begins when the trees are between 3 and 6 years old; however, exact timing will depend on the type of citrus (lemons, oranges, grapefruit, etc.), the cultivar, your climate, the health of the plant and its care, and other factors. Flowering is not seasonal but occurs during warm weather and regular rainfall.

Planting

Always get the planting area ready beforehand, amending the soil if necessary. Choosing a suitable location is also important. For instance, when planting a grapefruit tree, an area on the southernmost side of the home not only offers the most sun but also provides optimal winter protection. Keep the tree at least 12 feet (4 m.) from buildings, walks, driveways, etc. This will allow for adequate growth. Grapefruit trees can be planted in spring or fall, depending on where you’re located and what works best for you and your region’s conditions. Keep in mind that those planted in spring must contend with the heat of summer while fall-planted trees must endure the hardships of unseasonably cold winters. Dig the planting hole both wide and deep enough to accommodate the roots. After placing the tree in the hole, backfill halfway with soil, firmly pressing down to squeeze out any air bubbles. Then water the soil and allow it to settle before backfilling with the remaining soil. Keep the soil level with the surrounding area.

Care

Planting your grapefruit tree correctly is the first step of your care regime. Bountiful trees will require consistent attention to ensure they stay happy and healthy. The best way to care for a grapefruit tree is to equip yourself with the knowledge to be mindful of its needs. Below, we’ll look at how to care for this evergreen citrus tree.

Water: You need to water your grapefruit plant thoroughly once to three times per week for the first year after planting. In the summer, in particular, it will require a deep water session as soon as the topsoil layer becomes dry.

Fertilizing: As is the case with most citrus trees, you should feed your grapefruit plants every month or so during their growing season and less frequently during the colder seasons. With that being said, it also depends on the overall health of your trees. A lush, thriving grapefruit tree that is budding and producing fruit likely doesn’t need additional nutrients and is receiving enough sustenance from the ground and water.

Soil: As a growing medium, garden soil provides a substrate that not only anchors plants but also allows the transport of water and nutrients to the plant’s roots. The pore spaces between soil particles facilitate aeration, resulting in increased or decreased airflow around the roots, a vital contributor to plant health. But each type of soil varies in its composition, texture and water-retention ability. Because all plants don’t thrive in all types of garden soil.
